Debate Camp

We just finished up a week of Ethos debate camp and now Ariel is pumped for a new season of NCFCA debate!  I must say after a week of camp I am liking the resolution a bit better and back in the swing of all the terminology.  The Ethos instructors were great and sure saved me a lot of teaching in our club this year!
We took the end of spring and summer off of debate and on Monday when the camp first started it took my brain a bit to recall the things I already knew!   This is our second year so the learning curve is definitely less extreme than last year!
This year’s resolution is,” Resolved: That the United States Federal Government should significantly reform its criminal justice system. “So needless to say we’ll be learning a lot about the criminal justice system.  Some of the topics we talked about at camp were; Mandatory Minimum sentencing, DNA testing, Prison overcrowding, rehabilitation (or lack thereof), non-violent offenders (mostly drug involved), disenfranchisement and the CSI effect.  There will be many more topics we’ll explore I’m sure.

At our house we give lots of school credit for Speech and Debate.  They put a lot of time in and certainly deserve credit for it.  What I like is that it’s not simply textbook learning, its knowledge they will actually be understanding and using, not simply memorizing.  I can’t stress enough how amazing this is!  Debate is one of the only academic activities I know where they really get to assimilate so many typically academic skills/knowledge into real life activities.

We had everyone at the camp over for a cookout one night (a break from all the thinking!)  It was a lot of fun even though it was very hot.

Ariel had a great time and misses all her new debate camp friends very much.  She’s looking forward to the first tournament just so she can see them all again!  That’s another fun element of debate, all the friends you make.

If you’ve never checked out debate I encourage you to do so at NCFCA.  We’d love to see you at the next tournament!
